However, when a person regularly feels disproportionate levels of anxiety, it might become a medical disorder. Anxiety disorders form a category of mental health diagnoses that lead to excessive nervousness, fear, apprehension, and worry.
These disorders alter how a person processes emotions and behave, also causing physical symptoms. Mild anxiety might be vague and unsettling, while severe anxiety may seriously affect day-to-day living. Anxiety disorders affect 40 million people in the United States. It is the most common group of mental illnesses in the country.
However, only Knowing the difference between normal feelings of anxiety and an anxiety disorder requiring medical attention can help a person identify and treat the condition.
In this article, we look at the differences between anxiety and anxiety disorder, the different types of anxiety, and the available treatment options. When an individual faces potentially harmful or worrying triggers, feelings of anxiety are not only normal but necessary for survival.
Since the earliest days of humanity, the approach of predators and incoming danger sets off alarms in the body and allows evasive action. These alarms become noticeable in the form of a raised heartbeat, sweating, and increased sensitivity to surroundings. This prepares humans to physically confront or flee any potential threats to safety. For many people, running from larger animals and imminent danger is a less pressing concern than it would have been for early humans.
It can still be essential to survival — anxiety about being hit by a car when crossing the street, for example, means that a person will instinctively look both ways to avoid danger. The duration or severity of an anxious feeling can sometimes be out of proportion to the original trigger, or stressor.
Physical symptoms, such as increased blood pressure and nausea, may also develop. These responses move beyond anxiety into an anxiety disorder. While a number of different diagnoses constitute anxiety disorders, the symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder GAD will often include the following:.Researchers have documented that listening to music can be effective for reducing pain in people who generally have high levels of anxiety.
Investigators discovered music can be used as a distraction and is effective among those who can easily become absorbed in cognitive activities. In the study, researchers from the University of Utah Pain Research Center evaluated the potential benefits of music for diverting psychological responses to experimental pain stimuli. Accordingly, the key to successful pain control from this method would be the degree of engagement by the patient in the diversion task.
One hundred forty-three subjects were evaluated for the study and were given a series of assessment measures to determine their personality characteristics and anxiety levels. Some of the subjects scored high on general anxiety measures that suggested they lived with more anxiety than the average person on a day-to-day basis.
The subjects were then instructed to listen to music tracks, follow the melodies, and identify deviant tones. During the music tasks, they were given safe, experimental pain shocks with fingertip electrodes. The findings showed that central arousal from the pain stimuli reliably decreased with the increasing music-task demand. Music helps reduce pain by activating sensory pathways that compete with pain pathways in the brain, stimulating emotional responses, and engaging cognitive attention.
Because the music is competing with the pain pathways in the brain, it appears to help to take the focus away from pain. A surprise finding was that the music helped study subjects with high levels of anxiety about pain more so than subjects who were not as concerned about the pain. Researchers noted that low anxiety actually may have diminished the ability to engage in the task.
People with low general levels of anxiety may not benefit from music as a distraction from pain as much as those who have higher levels of general anxiety. The discovery that anxiety appears to aid engagement with a distraction is considered a new finding, according to the scientists.
Further, the researchers believe that this association implies that these personality characteristics should be considered when recommending engagement strategies for pain relief.

I was in high school, at a party, and I had just tried marijuana for the first time. My chest was pounding, and I was convinced I was having a heart attack. Annoyingly, the operator did not share my sense of urgency. In a moment of boredom two years ago, I turned this memory into my first comedy rap about my anxietyin the style of The Lonely Island and Jon Lajoie. It was thrilling. In fact, the experience was so therapeutic that I decided to take more recent anxious "episodes" from my life and rap about them.
Like keeping a journal, writing comedic raps about my anxiety is a form of emotional release. Condensing problems into silly couplets allows me to organize chaotic thoughts into a structure that makes more sense. The self-conscious version of myself, the version that can't or won't discuss my anxiety, goes away and I inhabit this rap persona where I feel comfortable talking about my deepest fears and insecurities.
I decided to name this rap alter ego, "Steve. Comedy rappers like Lonely Island and Lajoie speak to me because they use the hyper-masculine genre of hip hop to sing about things men are conditioned to see as emasculating. Instead of boasting, "I'm the strongest, I'm the coolest, I'm the sexiest," these guys boast, "I'm the weakest, I'm the sorriest, and I lack sex appeal.
They were performing with the same bravado men were supposed to feel, but rapping about how they really felt. I took this formula and made it more personal. Lonely Island and Lajoie play characters in their raps to make a point. I want to remove that comedic distance. This small distinction makes me feel comfortable discussing in public the things I would never discuss as "Chris. I'll be the first to acknowledge that some of my fears are ridiculous. My last three relationships have ended because I'm convinced I'm unable to fall in love.
I'm afraid to fall asleep because I think I might die. These thoughts terrified me, and I harbored them inside. But almost immediately after I posted my first video Xanax on Youtube and Instagram, people started to reach out to me and say things like "This happens to me! Steve provides me with a platform to engage with other anxious people.
That bond — knowing you're not alone — can help lessen the power anxiety has over you. I chose rap as my medium of expression because I love the art form and it helps me feel better.
Yet I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge one glaring point: I am a white rapper. Much of my anxiety stems from excess. I recognize this is a very privileged form of anxiety to have.According to the National Alliance on Mental Illnessapproximately Black Americans are 20 percent more likely to suffer from serious mental health issues but also half as likely to use mental health services compared to white or Asian Americans.
Many rappers have long reinforced the anti-therapy narrative. My experience told me more than what you going to tell me. For years, rappers from Eminem to Ice Cube have echoed this faulty idea of rap as a replacement for therapy. These days, though, the relationship between rap and therapy is going through a radical evolution.
Earlier this year, just before his death by accidental choking, Prodigy sat down with Dr. A—encouraging a shifting attitude when it comes to rappers being open to therapy, or simply sharing with someone.
Jordan, Chris Rock, Michael Che, Trevor Noah, and Meek Mill to talk about black mental healthin what felt like its own series of mini therapy sessions. You need help. Kid Cudi was one of the first rappers to candidly talk about his therapy. I had no other choice. In recent years, more rappers have been vocal about seeing therapists. Last year, Run-D. Rappers empowered by therapy are exposing others to the effects.
Chance the Rapper recently opened up about his struggles with anxiety and how the larger discourse surrounding mental health in rap is helping him speak up. Ironically, while rappers themselves have only recently tuned in to the benefits of therapy, their work has been helping people for nearly two decades.
Hip-hop therapy has continued to expand this decademaking its way into Bronx classrooms and more recently counseling offices in Philly. Meanwhile, the Hip Hop Therapy Global Institute uses rap for therapeutic techniques in its outreach programs. So, as black artists warm to the idea of therapy, so do many members of their captive audience. We could call it reparations. Pleas from other rappers young and old are louder now than ever, and these kinds of calls to action are valuable.
