What am I doing wrong? You can skip the complex Canvas manipulation and do this entirely with Drawables, using LayerDrawable.

You have one of two choices: You can either define it in XML then simply set the image, or you can configure a LayerDrawable dynamically in code. It can help you draw objects and try them one on top of the other.

I tried your solution but I had animation under the smaller image so that didn't work. But then I tried to place one image in a relative layout that's suppose to be under first and then on top of that I drew the other image that is suppose to overlay and everything worked great. So RelativeLayout, DroidDraw and you are good to go : Simple, no any kind of jiggery pockery : and here is a bit of code for ya:.

You can use the code below to solve the problem or download varex muffler here.

Thread Deleted Email Thread. Hey guys, I have been searching a lot and I can't seem to find an app with this function. All I want is to open up a camera app. Then set the transparency of the picture to half or whatever feels right. Then align the new camera shot with the old picture and take a shot.

This is one of the best ways to do a before after shot. I have found few apps on the play store that do this function half-assed. There is an app called "overlay camera" this apps looks pretty outdated but in it, you can overlay an image and set the transparency using the slider and take the picture. The transparent picture should only be used for alignment but this app saves the camera picture and the overlaid picture into one blurry mess of a picture.

There is another app called "Time Spirit" and in it you can create a photo lapse. But you can't overlay a picture from your gallery. It uses the last picture you took as an overlay for your next picture. So does any app out there exists that will work or me? OP Junior Member. Join Date: Joined: Feb Junior Member. I want to display a header for branding on the top of the camera preview. The header is a jpeg image. You can use SurfaceView and create a CustomView that will open the camera and you can adjust its size in the xml accordingly.

Below is a pseudo code. Now you have to include the view that you created using SurfaceView in your xml like this. Now you can use this main. You will have to handle the whole camera preview and taking picture yourself. You can have your own layout over the preview area and add your graphic to it. This camera project will help you. I'm afraid you have to implement camera preview screen yourself.

In theory an overlay can be added to other application by modifying its layout or by creating an overlay window. The first way is impossible to implement and the second way can be implemented I think but it's kind of a hack and a error prone method.

Implementing you own camera activity is not a very difficult task but it's rather challenging. I would recommend you to take a look at the default Camera application. Callback in your activity and then attach the camera to the surface view like this, its my full code please be careful with bitmaps and canvas that is the tricky part :. To do so:. Then inside the Activity java file, ie MotionDetector.

Then end result would be an image overlay above the SurfaceView. Subject to the quality of the header image, the rendered quality of the header shall seem original.

Hope it helps. Learn more. The Camera API on Android supports very little native functionality for square photos, limiting you to the resolutions that the camera supports, which varies from device to device. In order to accomplish this, we overlay views on top of the camera preview to make it look square:. You can see we make the SurfaceView our camera preview match the full width and height of the layout, taking up the full screen.

We use a RelativeLayout as the parent so we can then create an overlay view, here another RelativeLayoutand align it to the bottom of the parent, on top of the preview.

After that, in our Activity, we set the height of the overlay so that it fills enough of the screen to make the preview appear to be square. We do that by setting the height equal to the height of the preview, minus the width. After you initialize your camera, try to match the preview and picture sizes to a value that is greater than the size of the square we want:. Next we look at the cameras supported picture sizes - the size of the actual pictures that can be taken.

It is possible that there is no picture size that matches the preview size, so in this case we default to the first picture size. You can start the preview and handle permissions in accordance with the Android Developer Guidebut once it comes to handling the captured photo, we have one more thing we need to do. For more information on how to do this, see the setDisplayOrientation sample code. Calling this from the onPictureTaken event of the Camera.

PictureCallback interface will give us a perfectly square image that matches the preview displayed to the user. Blog Contact. Luckily, square photos are achievable using the following steps: Display a fullscreen camera preview with non-transparent overlays to make it look square.

When the photo is taken, crop the section of the image that matches your square preview. Square Preview. Let me know if this post was helpful on Twitter kylewbanks or down below, and follow me to keep up with future posts!Account Options Sign in. Top charts.
